Genre paintings that depict famous places, such as The Views of Scenic Sites Itsukushima and Wakanoura screens from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, were popular during the first half of the Edo period (1603–1868). Not only are the Santa Barbara screens beautifully executed but the figures shown in the banquet scenes recall precisely the types of characters seen in earlier Muromachi period Debates on Rice and Wine narrative handscrolls. This talk will analyze how the two works, despite their differences in formats and time periods, are visually closely related.
