Time and Space in the Yanshan Murals at Mount Wutai

The Northern Song (960–1127) and Jin (1115–1234) murals in Yanshan Monastery’s Mañjuśrī Hall are masterworks of religious painting, each pairing a specific site with a Buddhist narrative. This lecture analyzes these murals and related texts to identify individual episodes and explore how they shaped the viewer's interior experience. Ultimately, the presentation situates this pictorial program within twelfth-century Mount Wutai's socio-religious milieu, arguing that the hall's murals visualize the eastward transmission and localization of Buddhism.
